Position title: IT Network Engineer, NOC Junior Engineer

The University of Maryland’s Network Operations Center unit (NOC) is responsible for monitoring, managing and ensuring high availability of the University’s wired and wireless network in a 24×7×365 environment. NOC triages incoming incidents from the service desk via the ServiceNow ticketing system, messaging systems (email, Webex), phones and tools, and resolves the issue or escalates them to the appropriate groups.

This NOC Junior Engineer position fulfills network resource and service requests, supports the campus community with network related issues, and provides on-site customer support.
This position requires an understanding of network security and may require the development and deployment of network security services.

Operations, duty, audit reports and documentation are essential critical components of this position. This position mentors the Network Operations Students group within the Division of Information Technology. This involves training, shadowing, guiding, and monitoring of work tasks. The engineer may need to support student staff with their duties to ensure work tasks are being performed properly.

This position may require weekend/overnight on-call shifts to troubleshoot and resolve issues or provide maintenance support to the University of Maryland, College Park main campus and satellite offices.
 
 
Minimum qualifications

EDUCATION
    • Bachelor’s degree with preferred emphasis in Computer Science, Information Systems, Math or a related field

 

 
CERTIFICATIONS
  • Network certification (CCNA, Network+, etc.)
 
EXPERIENCE
  • At least 2 years of network operations or IT service desk experience working in an enterprise environment including routers, access switches, firewalls, VPNs, wireless access points, wireless encryption protocols (WPA2), and using wireless protocol analyzers and other wireless troubleshooting tools
  • Experience using enterprise Network Management Systems applications (Broadcom Spectrum, HP Openview, Cisco Prime, SolarWinds, etc.)
  • Experience with network services tools (Infoblox, BlueCat, etc.)
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES
  • Valid driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle
 
OTHERS:
  • Well-developed organizational skills and keen attention to detail
  • Ability to work in a team environment, as well as independently
 
Preferences
 
EXPERIENCE:
  • One year of Network Operations Center (NOC) experience

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:
  • Technical knowledge of and experience working with current hardware including:
  • Cisco and Aruba routers and switches
  • Cisco and Aruba wireless controllers (WLC) and Access Points (WAP)
  • Cisco and Aruba firewalls and VPNs
  • Infoblox DNS, DHCP, IPAM (DDI)
  • Network Access Control solutions
  • APC Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS)
  • Broadcom monitoring tools
  • Other monitoring tools including Cisco, Aruba, Paessler, SolarWinds

OTHERS:
  • Additional wireless network troubleshooting
  • Experience with higher education networks
  • Routing, switching, wireless, multicast, QoS, network management principles, firewalls, VPNs, network security principles, network capacity planning and management.
 
Additional certifications:  Network certifications.

Benefits Included:

Salary range: $74,000 – $82,000.


Physical demands: 
  • Ability to travel to a remote location for support or implementation of services.
  • Ability to walk to campus buildings needing service
  • Ability to lift moderately heavy objects such as network switches. Ability to install networking equipment that includes climbing ladders, lifting network equipment, working with hand tools, and accessing mechanical rooms.
  • Ability to be on-call, and provide off-hour support which may include traveling to the University or other campus locations
  • Sitting for long periods of time.
  • Willingness to work different shifts in a 24 hour period.
